Decluttering Tips for Hoarders

Decluttering tips for hoarders is meant to help you get your house under control if you’re a person who really struggles with hoarding. It will definitely take effort on your part, but with some time and a little grit, I believe you can live clutter-free and under control!

Hoarding is a real problem. I know it’s been the brunt of jokes, and people casually call each other hoarders if they tend to keep more than they get rid of. Hoarding is such a real issue, that there’s actually been tv shows made about it.

But what if you’re the hoarder, and you are the one trying to live in a home where you’re so overwhelmed by clutter, you don’t even know where to start getting rid of it?

Then..

The First Step is to Admit There is a Problem

It really is. Because once you realize you have a problem hoarding, you can actually start to do something about it. Admitting you may have a problem getting rid of your things will actually help you find some freedom.

You’ll be ready to take action and start decluttering your home. That’s what I’m here for. I’m gonna help you with these decluttering tips for hoarders.

Understand the Benefits of Decluttering

Before you even get started eliminating a single item from your home, I want you to realize that there are actually benefits to decluttering. Did you know that?

As with anything, when you do the hard work, you’ll actually reap the benefits. You’ll have a more peaceful home (and life). You’ll be able to find things you didn’t even know you had. Additionally, you could actually even save money. Your health will be better. In general, your entire outlook on life can be lifted when you begin to declutter your home.

I like to start with knowing the benefits of decluttering because maybe you didn’t even realize there were any. Perhaps you’ve thought that living as a hoarder was a way of life and there really wasn’t a reason to do anything else. I

’m here to tell you that decluttering your home will make you healthier, happier, and maybe even land you a few bucks in your pocket!

Set Small and Realistic Goals

Be realistic when you decide how much and what you will declutter. It’s not an easy thing to get rid of the things you’ve held onto. I know that. That’s why having easy goals that will bring you quick-wins is a good idea.

It’ll be much more motivating for you if you can set a goal, achieve that goal, and then set another!

Don’t Overwhelm Yourself

If your home is so full of clutter, you’re actually considered a hoarder, then it probably didn’t get like that overnight. Therefore, the chances of you decluttering your home overnight are next to impossible.

We need to be realistic. I want you to take the decluttering process slowly (but not so slowly that you forget to do it!). We’ll go a little at a time, making sure to keep from getting overwhelmed. That’s not necessary. You need to give yourself a little breathing room, develop a plan, and then get to work!

Clean Up What You Can First

The first decluttering tip for hoarders is to clean the areas you can first. Now, maybe your house is so overrun by clutter that you don’t have a clue where to even clean up. Start with anything.

Pick one tiny spot to clean up and do it. Can you wash the dishes? Put a load of laundry in the washing machine? Throw some newspapers away? Anything. Then move on to the next thing you can clean up, working your way through the house.

Once you see that your efforts are making a difference, you’ll be a little more motivated to keep decluttering your home. That’s excellent! Let’s keep going!

Have a Solid Plan for Decluttering

I’ve found that if I don’t have a plan for getting rid of my things, I have no idea what to do. One of my favorite ways to declutter my home, and the tip I’m giving you today is to use The Decluttering Binder.

In it, I’ve made up systems that will help you quickly and easily get your home clutter-free. Now my clients tell me that they’ve used The Decluttering Binder and it’s actually made decluttering their houses fun! Imagine that!

Here's how to get motivated to clean when you're overwhelmed by the mess.

Make a Quick Decision on Each Item

I’m sure that if you’re a hoarder, then letting go of objects doesn’t come easily or naturally. That’s ok. For this, my tip for you is not to think about an item for too long. I mean it! Look at an object and then quickly decide whether you want to keep it or not.

But be practical! Ask yourself these questions when decluttering to decide whether or not you should keep something. Be honest with yourself when answering and then if the object meets the criteria for getting rid of, get rid of it!

Don’t Handle Objects More than Once

In the same way, it’s important to deal with an item once, and only once. As you decide what to do with it, take care of it. In other words, don’t put it down, only to come back to it later.

Make your decision, then either get rid of the item or put it away. This will make your job so much easier and save you a ton of time.

If You’re Unsure, Put it in a Decide Later Box

There are some things that do require a little more thought and that’s ok. But I’m gonna ask you to be very careful here. It would be really easy to put everything in a decide later box and then you’ll be right back where you started from.

Put a limit on how many items will go in your decide later box. Make yourself make the hard decisions as often as you can. When you just can’t, then use the box. You’ll also need to make a deadline for yourself for when you’ll take care of the items in your box.

Don’t let them sit there for years, becoming nothing more than a heap of clutter. You’ll defeat the purpose you started out to accomplish, which is to declutter your home!

Get Rid of Any Unused Items

I’m sure that if your house is full of clutter, then you have things your not using. Amiright?!  You know I am! 😉

Those are the things you wanna get rid of immediately! Don’t hold onto them for another day. You’ll be amazed at how much you can get rid of, just be decluttering the things you’re not using. Get a little taste of the freedom getting rid of things brings. It’s amazing!

Sell Anything You Don’t Need

If you’re having a hard time getting rid of your items, let this motivate you: you can actually make money by selling your clutter! That’s right! There are many people who may be looking for exactly what you’ve been hoarding.

Now that’s motivation!

There are so many stories online about people making a hefty income simply by selling the things they have been hoarding. What are you waiting for?? You may be sitting on a minefield!

What if you could stop hoarding and start decluttering? It's not as hard as you think! Come inside to see how to get a handle on your clutter once and for all!

Clear Paper Clutter Last

Do NOT, and I repeat, do NOT start your decluttering process by dealing with paper clutter. You’ll fizzle out and never come back to decluttering again.

Paper clutter takes a lot of time to deal with and also occupies a lot of mental space. You can deal with paper clutter once you’ve gotten the majority of the clutter out of your home.

Ask for Help

We all need help sometimes. There’s no shame in asking someone you trust to help you. In fact, the chances are, that person may have been waiting for you to ask. If you have a trusted friend or loved one, let them in to help you out.

Don’t be ashamed! Be proud of yourself for taking the first step in getting your home clutter-free! When you invite someone to help you, you’ll be making the task of decluttering your home a little less overwhelming and a little more bearable!

Hire it Out if You Have To

There’s always the option of going to the professionals. That is, if your budget will allow it. There are people who are trained to deal with hoarding and they’ll know exactly what to do.

If you’re in a place where you want your home to be clutter-free, but you just can’t do it yourself, then hire it out. You have my full blessing!

Make a Plan to Keep Your Home Clutter-Free

Once you’ve gotten your house de-cluttered, you’ll want to make a plan to keep it that way. Old habits die hard, so be aware that it won’t be easy. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, though!

When you’re tempted to start hoarding things again, remind yourself of the freedom you’ve found in keeping your home clutter-free. It’s a feeling like no other!

Think About How Different Your Life Will be, Once You’ve Decluttered Your Home

You must realize that a life of hoarding does not bring joy and happiness. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Therefore, to motivate yourself, you need to think about how different your life will be once you get rid of the clutter. Use that to motivate you to declutter your home and keep it that way!

These decluttering tips for hoarders are only as good as the work you put into them. You have to do your part. But if you really want your life to be different, you’ll put them into action and change your life as early as today! Can you even imagine??!!
