Here’s How To Clean House Fast And Easy

1. If You Have Kids, Now is the Time to Put Them to Work!

It’s a good idea to let your kids know the plan ahead of time, that way if you have an emergency house cleaning situation, they know exactly what to do.

First things first…let your kids know that you need a joint effort and that everyone needs to work together, quickly, and efficiently. Let them know that they’re part of the solution in helping you get the house looking company ready in a short amount of time. I’m always amazed at how well my kids spring into action when I need them.

It’s absolutely essential and totally acceptable to involve your kids. In fact, if you involve your kids in cleaning up your house, you’ll teach them responsibility and a sense of belonging. After all, if they helped make the mess, they should feel very comfortable helping clean it up!

Your kids are capable of more than you might think and can quickly help you get the house cleaned.

2. If You Don’t Have Kids or They’re Not Available, Don’t Worry!

You can still get an insane amount of stuff done in a short amount of time as long as you know the plan. See…I LOVE plans!! They make my heart settle down!!

So the big thing is…DON’T PANIC!!!!

Here Are The Fastest Tips To Clean Your House

The following tips are ways you can clean house fast. They’ll help you go from disorganized to neat and clean in a short amount of time. They’re not a replacement for deep cleaning your home – which I highly recommend planning for and then doing it. This is just a quick way to get your house in order fast for whatever reason you need it!

1. Start With the Least Messy Area First

It sounds funny, but if you get the littlest jobs done first, you’ll feel so accomplished you’ll wanna keep going. Not only that, but cleaning up a small area will make your house look cleaner if your company happens to stop in a little sooner than expected.

It’s so much easier to tackle the last (big) job when everything else is finished. It won’t seem as overwhelming.

The only exception I make to this rule is to clean up the kitchen ahead of anything else. That’s because our kitchen is where people enter the home and I feel like it should be cleaned right away in case company comes in before I’m finished with everything else. Besides, if the kitchen is clean, the rest of the house seems cleaner too.

2. Use Timers to Get Your House Cleaned Quickly

You don’t always want to clean your house fast just because company is coming over. Sometimes you just need to clean up the house and you don’t want to spend the entire day doing it. If you want it done quickly, then a timer can be your best friend.

I find it incredibly motivating to set a five minute timer and try to beat the clock. You’d be surprised at how much quicker you work and how much you can get done in a short amount of time.

These decluttering tips for hoarders will help you clean your house fast

The other day I let my bedroom get out of hand and it definitely needed attention. (I’m not saying how bad, you can just use your imagination!) When I walked into my room I was fully prepared to sit down and relax. But when I saw everything that needed to be cleaned up and I decided that I just could not relax until it was finished.

I set a quick five minute timer using my Google Home Mini (similar to the Amazon Echo Dot) and I hustled to get everything done. Since I was working so quickly, (because even a friendly competition with the timer is fun!) I actually finished cleaning up my room before the timer went off. (I’m here to tell ya though, that sometimes I need more than just a five minute timer!)

I was actually surprised at how fast I cleaned up my room. Set timers for each area of the house you need to get cleaned. And then get to work!

3. Always Clean House In Zones

I don’t know about you but when my house needs to be cleaned (and especially when I need to do it fast) then I tend to go frantically from room to room and not really make much progress anywhere.

Instead, work on one area and one area only. In our house we call “areas” jurisdictions. And you really don’t have to call it that, but I like fancy words, and I think it sounds neat! Anyway, stick to ONE area and don’t move from that area until it’s finished.

I’m sure you’ll have things you need to bring to other rooms, in order to put them away. I like to use a basket (or two – or however many I need) and sort things into those baskets to put away when I’m finished straightening the room. You can always put things in piles also, but baskets are nice because you can carry them. 🙂

Using the above tip to start in the easiest areas of the house first, move from room to room as quickly as possible, saving the hardest room for last.

Here's how to get motivated to clean when you're overwhelmed by the mess.

If You Have Kids at Home You Can Give Them Each a Jurisdiction

You’ll definitely wanna do this ahead of time though. You don’t want to try and divide your house up into sections when you’re trying to get everything cleaned up quickly.

As I mentioned above, you can divide your house up into sections, or as I said I like to call them…jurisdictions.

Assign a jurisdiction to each of your kids and then teach them exactly what you expect them to do.

  • Are they in charge of keeping it straightened all day long?
  • Do they have certain times during the day they should be checking it?
  • What exactly do you want them to do?
  • Do you want them to deep clean or just straighten?
  • What other expectations do you have?

The jurisdiction becomes the responsibility of the child to it belongs to.

He or she can make sure to straighten it all throughout the day or whenever you choose ahead of time.

If for some reason you need to get your house ready quickly, make a general announcement that everyone needs to take care of their jurisdictions. You’ll be amazed at how you can clean house fast when everyone springs into action. You can clean the house quickly when you divide and conquer!

4. Use a Chore System to Clean Your House Quickly

I’ve designed a chore system that takes all the guesswork out of chores! As long as you teach your kids how to use the system, it pretty much runs itself! It will easily organize your kids into a team of people who can quickly clean the house.

Here are tips on finding time to declutter

In the chore system, each of your kids will receive a card with a chore and instructions on it. They’ll know exactly what you expect them to do. So when you need to clean your house quickly, you can hand out their cards and they can get to work fast.

5. Play Music to Clean Your House Fast

Music is invigorating and very helpful for motivating you to clean your house fast. We love to play bluegrass in our house because it’s not something we usually listen to. (Just not my preference! 🙂 ) Since it’s a little bit silly, it makes us all feel light hearted. The upbeat tempo often makes us work to clean our house quicker.

Whatever your style of music, it seems like if you have something to jam to, it makes cleaning your house a lot more fun!

Hint: You can play music fast with an Alexa! Just tell it what to play and violá!

6. Always Finish With a Reward!

Rewards are a great motivator. They work well for children and adults too! I don’t know about you, but if I know that at the end of my hard work I’ll receive a reward, then I’m excited to clean my house as quickly as I can. (See? Kids aren’t the only ones who like something special! I’m a sucker for a good reward!)

Now Your House is Clean and Ready

Your house is ready for company. (Or whatever other occasion you might have.) Now enjoy the time you can spend visiting over coffee or tea (or special time with your kids.) Pat yourself on the back for cleaning your house so quickly.

Sure, it’s not ideal and you might not feel like you deep cleaned your house, but you were able to straighten up your house fast. And that deserves celebration!

You might not always find yourself in a mad rush to clean your house because you have unexpected company coming, but having a plan to clean your house quickly is invaluable. If you start to notice the house getting out of hand, then get in front of the mess and clean your house right away before it overwhelms you!

You’ll know exactly what to do to make sure your house is neat and clean and it won’t take you all day to do it!

Speed Cleaning Checklist (What To Clean When And In What Order)

Here’s the Breakdown of Time:

Obviously every house is different. Some have four bathrooms, while some only have one. Some have a basement, a family room and an office, while others just have a living room. But even though all of our houses vary in size, shape, and mess level, here’s a general breakdown of the approximate time it should take you to clean your house fast. (Not a deep cleaning, just so we’re on the same page! 🙂 )

  • Clean dishes, load dishwasher, wipe down counters – 10 minutes
  • Straighten stray items from living room, dining room, family room, etc. – 4 minutes
  • Wipe down bathroom, check the toilet to see if it needs to be spot cleaned, wipe the sink, wipe the mirror – 3 minutes
  • Straighten entrance – 2 minutes
  • Put away junk mail and papers – 2 minutes
  • Straighten bedrooms – 5 minutes
  • Sweep and vacuum floors (spot sweeping and vacuuming, not a deep cleaning) 4 minutes

Like I said, you may need to give or take a few minutes on your house, but this should give you a pretty good idea of the time it could/should take for you to clean your house fast. Even if you doubled the time, it would only take you an hour. (So just let your friend know you need a little extra time!)  On the contrary, you might not need this much time. And I’m sure it’ll vary from-time-to- time, too.

Bonus Tip:

Declutter your house often! I mean, it makes sense, right? The less things you have in your house, the easier it will be to keep it clean and organized.

I wasn’t always great at decluttering, though I’ve always loved organizing (because organizing and decluttering really are two different things). Since I’ve started getting rid of things we don’t need, it’s been much easier to keep the house in order for longer periods of time.

It also stands to reason that with less things in the house, there’s less mess to clean up quickly if I ever need to.
